Family Therapy

A family is a unit, and it is composed of separate parts and as such each part of the unit is an important part of making the family. Each part of the unit may have a different role or level of power but each member significantly influences how the family behaves and feels. Family therapy can be helpful when the family as a whole is feeling burdened by grief, life cycle transitions, and other sorts of communication issues (anger, rebelling, secrets, etc.). Family therapy addresses emotional processes in the family, communication patterns, and behaviors. The family decides the direction they wish to go and the therapist shapes the path therapy will walk to get there.

  • At Mental Wealth Therapy, Liam uses Bowen Family Systems Therapy (BFST) as a main part of his approach; he also includes attachment-based theory and Cognitive Behaviour therapy (CBT). With the integration of these approaches, Liam can cater to individual needs in the family as well as the family as a whole.

    • Session length of 1:20 minutes is typical but adding more time is an option.

    • Session Frequency weekly or bi-weekly but there are Exceptions.

The treatment timeline usually lasts around 12 sessions to upwards of 30+ depending on the needs and wants of the family. It's not unusual for family therapy to switch over to marriage/couples work after the main family goals are met. (Two months to a year plus).

*Clients who stay longer than six months or a year often expand their goals as they achieve the initial ones that brought them in. They may also switch to monthly check ins.

Couple Therapy

Whether it be through marriage, cohabitation, together/apart, or dating each member contributes to the beauty of a relationship as much as they do the challenges they face. Couples may attend therapy to deal with infidelity, high conflict, and Co-parenting, they may also do so for growth, enriching intimacy, and strengthening connection. Couples therapy helps individuals in skill building in areas such as speaker-listener techniques, identifying emotions, and creating boundaries or rules of conflict. Couples therapy boils down to equipping both partners to better understand their partner's needs and desires in addition to communicating their own. Skills that might seem individually centered quickly become helpful to the couple as a whole.

  • At Mental Wealth Therapy, Liam utilizes ideas from Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) BFST and CBT to address deep emotions or simple behavioral changes. Breakout sessions, seeing one person from the couple at a time, will be used to break down each side of the couple's story to then build up the couple's common interests and overall goal for therapy. One may attend Couples therapy to save their relationship and it has been known to do so, but the main goal is to help the partners better understand what's going on in the relationships so they can then decide what the best course of action is. Change is inevitable, one can grow surpassing the challenge at hand or one can choose to grow and end up leaving the problem behind.

Therapeutic Approaches

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

EFT is a structured, attachment-based approach that helps individuals and couples create secure, lasting emotional bonds. By exploring underlying emotions and needs, clients develop deeper understanding, heal relational wounds, and build stronger, more fulfilling connections.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT focuses on the connection between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. By identifying and challenging unhelpful thinking patterns, clients develop healthier coping strategies and improve emotional regulation. This structured approach is highly effective for anxiety, depression, and behavior change.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT helps individuals embrace thoughts and feelings without becoming overwhelmed by them. By focusing on mindfulness, values-based actions, and cognitive flexibility, clients learn to navigate difficulties while building a fulfilling and meaningful life.

Bowen Family Systems Theory (BFST)

Bowen FST views individuals within the context of their family and relational dynamics. By understanding generational patterns, emotional reactivity, and differentiation of self, clients develop healthier relationships and greater emotional independence.

Motivational Interviewing (MI)

MI is a collaborative, goal-oriented approach designed to enhance motivation for change. By addressing ambivalence and reinforcing personal values, clients build confidence in making meaningful, sustainable life changes.

Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET)

Narrative Therapy helps individuals separate themselves from their problems by viewing their experiences as stories that can be reinterpreted and reshaped. Through this approach, clients explore the meaning they’ve given to life events, uncover strengths, and develop new, empowering narratives.
